Description of Programs
EEB Collection Tours
The Biodiversity Research Collections (BRC) of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology reflect the richness of the world’s biodiversity. The mission of the BRC is to support scholarship, education, and outreach at the University, for the state of Connecticut, and the broader global research community.
The UConn Botanical Conservatory (UBC) contains one of the most diverse living teaching plant collections in the United States. This outstanding collection is a core unit of EEB's Collections and is used extensively for teaching and research at UConn.
Tours will be held at 2 and 2:30pm.
If you would like to join a tour, meet in the Biology/Physics Building Lobby near the giant ant!
Natural History Collections for 21st-Century Research with Pam and Doug Soltis
The Biodiversity Bonanza is being held in honor of the upcoming visit of two renowned members of the National Academy of Sciences, Pam and Doug Soltis from the Florida Museum at the University of Florida.
They will present a talk entitled Natural History Collections for 21st-Century Research from 3:30-4:30 in the Biology/Physics Building Rm 131.
This talk is being held as part of the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology's weekly seminar series.
A reception, exhibits, posters and natural history displays will immediately follow the talk in the Gant Science Complex Light Court.
Biodiversity Bonanza: Natural History Displays & Reception
Discover the awesome diversity of our collections in the Gant Science Complex Light Court after the Soltis' talk, starting at 4:30pm.
At a reception following the talk engage with faculty, students, and staff in learning about real specimens of some of the world’s most iconic and unusual animals and plants on the planet—including giant butterflies, miniature orchids, a passenger pigeon, the skull of a hippopotamus, carnivorous plants, the skeleton of a platypus, and an herbarium specimen prepared by renowned essayist and nature lover Henry David Thoreau!
The Museum's traveling exhibit "Legacy of a Lifetime of Collection: The Carl & Marian Rettenmeyer Story" will also be back on display! Follow along on the journey of a natural history specimen from the time is collected in the jungle all the way through its finding a home in the Biodiversity Research Collections.
The exhibit features images and specima data from the Army Ant Guest Collection (AAGC) and digital animations and interactives from past students in professor Anna Lindemann's Digital Media and Design "Animating Science" classes. Students in Digital Media and Design will have examples from two past projects on display: "Science Explainers" and "Scientific Poetic".
Biodiversity Poster Session
There will be a poster session highlighting natural history research starting at 4:30.
Posters will be on display during the reception, with students and faculty on hand to answer questions.
Anyone whose research uses or generates biodiversity data for the University's collections may submit a poster for display. If you have questions about poster submissions, please contact Dr. Jill Wegrzyn at jill.wegrzyn@uconn.edu.
